Judgments of differences and ratios of numerals

چکیده
Each subject performed two tasks, dividing a line segment so that either (a) the ratio of subjective lengths corresponded to the ratio of the magnitudes of two numerals or (b) the difference in length was proportional to the numerical difference. Had subjects actually performed two operations on the same scale, the responses would have been nonmonotonically related. Instead, data for the two tasks were nearly identical and ordinally compatible with either a ratio or a subtractive model. The ratio model implied scale values for numerals that were a positively accelerated function of numerical value, inconsistent with previous results. With a nonlinear response function for gl:aphic length, the subtractive model fit well, yielding scale values that were a negatively accelerated function of numerical value and a linear function of previously obtained scales. These results, together with other recent findings, suggest that subjects may perform the same operation in spite of instructions to judge "ratios" or "differences" and that this operation can be best represented by a subtractive model.

Ordinality and the nature of symbolic numbers.
The view that representations of symbolic and nonsymbolic numbers are closely tied to one another is widespread. However, the link between symbolic and nonsymbolic numbers is almost always inferred from cardinal processing tasks. In the current work, we show that considering ordinality instead points to striking differences between symbolic and nonsymbolic numbers. Human behavioral and neural d...
متن کاملMeasurement and the mental map
In order to test between subtractive and ratio theories of stimulus comparison, judges were asked to estimate "ratios" and "differences" of easterliness and westerliness of U.S. cities. "Difference" judgments fit the subtractive model, and "ratio" judgments fit the ratio model. However, "ratios" and "differences" were monotonically related, contrary to the theory that judges compute both relati...
متن کاملA Modfied Self-organizing Map Neural Network to Recognize Multi-font Printed Persian Numerals (RESEARCH NOTE)
This paper proposes a new method to distinguish the printed digits, regardless of font and size, using neural networks.Unlike our proposed method, existing neural network based techniques are only able to recognize the trained fonts. These methods need a large database containing digits in various fonts. New fonts are often introduced to the public, which may not be truly recognized by the Opti...

The distribution of the allophones of /?/in certain contexts involves free variation and gradient preferences. An organized survey was conducted to elicit the judgments of 37 native Persian speakers concerning the well-formedness of /?/allophonic behavior in five different phonological positions. The results showed that the differences in judgment between the various categories are not just t...
